MC65
Motorola has launched two new rugged mobile computers, both supporting CDMA as well as GSM wireless technologies. It now offers three handheld computers offering this dual combination. Thus these devices can handle all the U.S. carrier networks.
The ES400 was the first dual CDMA-GSM handheld to be launched in june,’10. Next came the MC65 with the same size and connectivity convenience but more rugged in design to be able to handle drops and damage risks more than the others in its category. It is priced at $2295. The other handheld to be launched with the MC65 is the dynamic MC959B, which is not as small and slim to fit into a pocket, but rugged enough.
The ES400 is rated as durable, the mC65 as the crossover model from the consumer grade smart phone for management professionals requiring longer lasting handheld devices. The MC959B is meant for fields like shipping and logistics where a traditional device which is more rugged becomes a necessity.
Motorola explains its launch of these three smart phones in quick succession with the finding that enterprise customers need smart phones that last three to five years which most popular consumer smart phones do not last for. The new handheld computers make perfect sense in terms of costs incurred, the returns on investment and the functional efficiency they offer to enterprise managers. They meet the fast increasing demand for WAN enabled field technology which is also mobile.
The MC65 scores over the Intermec CS40 with its dual band wireless connectivity which makes it operational in both CDMA and GSM environments. The CS40 can support only UMTS that has been built upon the GSM radio concepts. Though both have Bluetooth connectivity and are Wi-Fi ready, the CS40 offers 802.11b/g support while the MC65 has 802.11a/b/g support. Other common features between the two include barcode scanners, camera with a resolution of 3.2 mega pixels, though the CS40 has a 2.8 inch touch screen compared to the mC65 sporting a larger 3.5 inch one. The MC65 is twice as heavy than the CS40 due to its battery and only an inch longer.
The MC959B comes with the Qualcomm Gobi chip and can therefore support both CDMA and GSM, becoming the first mobile computer to do so since other devices have separate radios for each band. Each of the three Motorola offerings are likely to have high demand in the coming months.

A recent survey conducted by Harris Executive Omnibus disclosed findings of 300 Fortune 1000 administrators.  There is a trend moving from PDAs and smart phones towards a more rugged handheld mobile computer.  Of the sixty percent surveyed who work in a mobile environment, sixty-seven percent are eager to replace their old equipment with efficient systems and eliminate the need for paper.

Currently, twenty-three percent of those surveyed utilize the rugged mobile computer in their business environment.  The remaining percentage is still actively working with cell phones and PDAs, demonstrating a need for integrated mobile technology.  Fortune 1000 executives surveyed reported transitioning to paperless productivity for environmental concerns and cost reduction.  According to numbers collected by Harris Executive Omnibus, thirty-eight percent of companies are currently paperless and twenty-nine percent are in the process of eliminating this need.  Fifteen percent of those analyzed have a long-term plan that includes going paperless.

Rugged mobile computers increase worker productivity while decreasing operation costs.  The smart phone and PDA still require the use of paper, while the mobile computer eliminates the dependency.  Once those surveyed transitioned to the rugged mobile computer, they had no desire to go back.  Businesses are able to convert their working environment to one that is efficient and free from errors.  Multiple job functions are abolished and data can be transferred at a quick rate.

The trend for company employees to be on the go at all times requires mobile networking. More and more individuals utilize their smart phones for web access to check their e-mail and obtain needed information. Infosecurity Europe has confirmed responses from 1000 companies through an iPass report that supports these findings. Though many people own blackberries, over half would prefer to utilize the Apple iPhone and some would actually replace their laptops for this technology. The IT security industry is finding this to be a serious issue. There are several risks which include compliance terms and lack of protection that arise from the use of smart phones.

Infosecurity Europe is presenting an event at London’s Earl’s Court on April 27th through April 29th. The exhibition centre will house many industry presenters that can possibly recommend resolutions for the mobile workforce. There are scheduled educational programs that offer free advice to guests and demonstrated by professionals. A safe and secure method of utilizing mobile technology for company usage would benefit IT managers.

In the past, mobile web usage was a slowly rising development. This is no longer true, as the need increases for workers to be mobile. A presenter at the Infosecurity Europe event has done research on this problem and a report can be accessed at http://www.infosec.co.uk/ExhibitorLibrary/662/Mobile_security_26.pdf. Most individuals and employees would need to pay for the information being provided, but the event is showcasing the concerns and resolutions by company specialists.
